1. INTERNET
Internet is also simply called net. It is the biggest network of computers.
Do you know what a computer network is?
When two or more computers connect with each other through some medium like a telephone wire, such a connection is known as a Computer Network.
Internet is the biggest network in which millions of computers are connected with each other through some medium like telephone wire or wireless media.

2. Requirements for an Internet Connection
For an internet connection, you require the following items:
- Multimedia Computer System: To use internet efficiently, one should have a multimedia computer system with all its features like speakers, microphone, etc.
- Modem: A modem is a device that allows you to connect your computer through telephone lines to transfer data from one computer to another. Modem is an acronym for Modulator/Demodulator.
- Telephone Line: A telephone connection is required to transfer the data from one computer to another.
- Internet Connection: Your computer must have an Internet connection that is provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) at monthly or yearly charges, depending on the package. Some of the ISPs in India are MTNL, VSNL, BSNL, Airtel, Tata, Reliance etc.
- Web Browser: It is an application software we need for internet. Examples of different Web Browsers are Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape Navigator, etc.

3. Uses of Internet
Today, Internet has become a powerful tool that is used by most of the people. Some of the main uses of internet are as follows:
1) Searching Information: Any sort of information on any topic can be searched through the internet. It is the fastest and the easiest tool for searching information.
2) Sending and Receiving Messages: Any types of messages, documents and files can be sent and received anywhere around the world by electronic mails (e-mails) through the internet. You can communicate through e-mails very efficiently, at a very low cost and in a very less time.
3) Advertising Products: Different companies can advertise and sell their products through their websites on the internet.
4) Shopping: A very common and frequent use of the internet is buying and selling various items while sitting at home. You can purchase items such as books, flowers, music CDs, pizza, stocks, used cars or anything that you can imagine.
5) Downloading Music, Movies, Games: Different movies, songs and games can be downloaded to your computer through the Internet for free or some money. You can even listen to music and play games on the internet.
6) Chat: The chat features allow you to exchange the typed messages with another person on the internet. A message you send will instantly appear on the other person’s computer.
7) Stay informed: The Internet gives you access to information on any subject of interest. This makes the Internet a valuable research tool. Most print sources such as newspapers and magazines have websites. Also, a number of magazines exist only online.

4. INTERNET RELATED TERMS
There are some technical terms used in internet, such as:
(a) World Wide Web (WWW): WWW is an electronic library that contains different information in the form of text, pictures, sound and videos. It is the largest collection of information available on the Internet.
(b) Web Browser: A web browser is a special program that is used to open different websites to get connected to the internet on your computer, a web browser must be installed into your computer. There are different web browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Chrome and more.
(c) Webpage: A single page on the world wide web with different information is a web page.
(d) Website: A collection of different webpages linked to each other is a website. Anybody can create his or her own website on the internet. Mostly websites are organised by different companies, organisations, schools, colleges, etc.
(e) URL: Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is an address of particular webpage. To open any web page, its URL must be given. It is also known as a web address.
(f) Home Page: The first page that appears whenever you open a browser or a website is the Home Page.
