Definition of Operating System:
An Operating System is a software that helps you to operate the computer system through its various parts. It controls and manages the different parts of a computer system. An operating system acts as a middleman between user and computer hardware.
Here are some of the very popular operating systems.
- MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System)
- Windows XP
- Windows 7
- Windows 8
- Windows 10
- Unix
- MAC OS
- MS Windows, etc.
Functions of Operating System:
- Device Management
- Memory Management
- Security Management
- File Management
- Application Management
Now, let’s have a look one by one.
- Device Management: An operating system controls the working of all input and output devices.
- Memory Management: An operating system allots the memory space to various application software. It also removes unnecessary files to create more space in computer’s memory.

- Application Management: An operating system gives a platform for the application software like MS Word, MS Paint etc., to run.
Types of Operating System
Look at the diagram to know the types of operating system
- Single User Operating System
- Multi User Operating System
- Graphical User Interface (GUI)
- Character User Interface (CUI)
These are the four types of operating system.
Now, Let’s have a look one by one.
- Single User Operating System: In a Single User Operating System, only one person can work at a time.
For example: Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.
- Multi User Operating System: More than one person can work at a time with a multi user operating system.
For example: UNIX, NETWARE and LINUX are famous multi user operating system.
- GUI (Graphical User Interface): GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. As the name suggests, such operating systems use icons on the monitor to work and navigate. A user just needs to point and click the icons or images to execute commands. Microsoft windows and Mac OS are GUI based operating system.
- CUI (Character User Interface): CUI stands for Character User Interface. Such operating systems need typed instructions to work and navigate within a computer. These operating systems are difficult to work with as they require a user to memorize a number of commands. MS-DOS (Microsoft-Disk Operating System) is a CUI based operating system.
